2011 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN The Will to Win Classic enters its twenty eighth year in July, 2011. This charity golf tournament has raised $1,500,000 for spinal cord research. These funds contributed significantly to the establishment of the Winnipeg Spinal Cord Research Centre in 1987. The prospect of a continuing source of funds dedicated to spinal cord research made possible the recruitment of talented young scientists, known as Will to Win Scholars. The existence of the centre and the presence of these dedicated doctors have been the basis for many advances in our knowledge of the major functional systems of the spinal cord. This knowledge is now leading to new strategies for restoration of lost function after injury. Today, the Spinal Cord Research Centre (SCRC) is in a position to play a worldwide leading role in the development of new neurosurgical techniques for treatment of spinal cord injury. In 2009 we began a new five year commitment to raise $700,000.00 to fund our creation of a “gifted professorship” in the Department of Physiology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. The successful candidate, selected from the “best and brightest” in the world, will work with the existing scientists at the SCRC. The evaluation process is underway and the selected scientist should join the SCRC team this summer. The funds donated on an ongoing basis by the Will to Win participants, have been and continue to be extremely important to the evolution of the SCRC. As we enter the third year of our latest endeavour, through the support of our numerous sponsors, we are on target to achieve our goal. The 2011 Will to Win Classic will be held at the St. Charles Country Club and the Elmhurst Golf & Country Club. Cliff Penner returns as our Platinum Sponsor ($25,000). Last year’s Diamond Sponsors ($10,000), McNaught Motors (the McNaught family), St. James Volkswagen (Russ Saladin & Rick Hetherington) and Manitoba Blue Cross (Andrew Yorke & Gord Webster), once again have agreed to continue their support for spinal cord research. These generous contributions, combined with our Gold ($5,000), Silver ($1,000) and Bronze ($300) Sponsors create the opportunity for a serious impact in the spinal cord research field. Please review the sponsors listed on this website. It is through the generosity of these people, who contribute to the Will to Win, that we have been able to be a significant player in raising the bar for spinal cord research. |
